Ontological Symmetry in Language: A Brief Manifesto

چکیده

In the tradition of quantified modal logic, it was assumed that significantly different linguistic systems underlie reference to individuals, to times and to 'possible worlds'. Various results from recent research in formal semantics suggest that this is not so, and that there is in fact a pervasive symmetry between the linguistic means with which we refer to these three domains. Reference to individuals, times and worlds is uniformly effected through generalized quantifiers, definite descriptions, and pronouns, and in each domain grammatical features situate the reference of terms as near, far or 'further' from the actual or from a reported speech act. We outline various directions in which a program of ontological symmetry could be developed, and we offer in the Appendix a symmetric fragment developed in a logic that can be seen as a compromise between an extensional and an intensional system. In the influential tradition of quantified modal logic, it was assumed that significantly different linguistic systems underlie reference to individuals, to times and to possible situations or 'possible worlds'. We argue that a variety of results from recent semantic research suggest that this is not so, and that there is in fact a pervasive symmetry between the linguistic means with which we refer to all three domains. We sketch the main arguments in favor of a uniform analysis and we discuss some directions in which a program of 'ontological symmetry' could be developed, as well as some of its broader consequences for cognitive science. One possibility though not the only oneis that a single abstract cognitive system underlies individual, temporal and modal talk in natural language.

From Embodiment to Metaphor: A Study on Social Cognitive Development and Conceptual Metaphor in Persian-Speaking Children

This study explores the metaphoric comprehension of normal Persian-speaking children, as well as theories of cognitive development and cultural and social impacts. The researchers discuss the improvement of the understanding of ontological conceptual metaphors through age growth and cognitive development, and how it helps to expand children’s thoughts and knowledge of the world. In this study, ...

Understanding top-level ontological distinctions

The main goal of this paper is to present a systematic methodology for selecting general ontological categories to be used for multiple practical purposes. After a brief overview of our basic assumptions concerning the way a useful top-level ontology should be linked to language and cognition, we present a set of primitive relations that we believe play a foundational role. On the basis of thes...

A Discussion on Concept of Symmetry snd Asymmetry

This paper is concerned about the concept os asymmetry. The different types of asymmetry for univariate and multivariate distributions have introduces been considered as well as some of usual asymmetry criteria. A brief overview of method for adding the capability of modeling asymmetry to a symmetry distribution is also a secondary purpose of this paper.

Semantic Forensics: An Application Of Ontological Semantics To Information Assurance

The paper deals with the latest application of natural language processing (NLP), specifically of ontological semantics (ONSE) to natural language information assurance and security (NL IAS). It demonstrates how the existing ideas, methods, and resources of ontological semantics can be applied to detect deception in NL text (and, eventually, in data and other media as well). After stating the p...
